Today was a sleep in day at camp - with breakfast at 9 instead of 8. After our weekend festivities - it was definitely needed!
Saturday morning P4 lead a special Chapel at the Council Ring and campers and staff spent the day with their teams preparing for the Olympics Competition Central. Afternoon thunder cancelled Free Swim but the spectacular guards opened the pool for the campers during free time. Saturday night at the movies created a nice break for the Staff to hold a Christmas in July Social and Art Gallery in the Lounge. Art was submitted by many staff members and some staff participated in a handmade ornament exchange. A most notable "piece" in the art show was called "Walter. In A Moment." and was submitted by Jordan. It was Walt's armchair - reclined with his Central hat and boots on hand. The end table next to the chair held Walt's keys, clipboard, dog leash, morning coffee cup and ice cream bowl. The best part was Walt believing the chair had been borrowed for Santa Claus. ha! Sunday began with the men's group of Adventure Pathfinders leading an instructed Eucharist service in the Council Ring with Father Jeff from St Peter's in Lewes. Kathy was really proud of the guys. Our Opening Olympic Ceremonies began at 11am. Team Madagascar presented a burning banner, chameleons, an elephant bird, traveling palms, penguins, explorers, several lemur species and of course King Julian. Italy displayed several regions of their country - including a reenactment of Adam and God in the Sistine Chapel, Gladiators, Roman gods and goddesses, mobsters, ninja turtles and a volcanic explosion in Pompeii. Brazil brought in a Carnival! Their banner opened like peacock feathers, Pele beat the Italian, Malagasy and Chinese soccer teams, Christ the Redeemer towered over us all, their musicians made us dance and their Bird of Paradise (who looked suspiciously like Woodstock) made us all laugh. China roared in with a beautiful dragon. Mulan came to visit, their Captains dressed as Yin and Yang, they had pandas, terracotta warriors and chopsticks too. Their banner even listed the Chinese Zodiac of every person on their team. We broke for lunch and continued with three rounds of events after siesta. The day culminated with a relay race that zig zags all over camp and ends with fire building. The first team to burn through their rope wins. And the trophy went to Team Madagascar!!! We all gathered on the beach for a cookout dinner and took short free swims before bed. Fourth session is in full swing and we are all getting excited for the weekend! Wednesday night cookout was a fun day for all. Homestead units headed out to outpost for burgers and capture the counselor. The pioneer units had a breakfast potluck, complete with “trainwrecks”, eggs with all the trimmings such as onions, peppers and meats. The pathfinder groups had a cookout in outpost. The girl adventure pathfinders made pasta with breadcrumbs and summer sausage. The male adventure pathfinders prepared jalapeno poppers. The sailing pathfinders made an apple crisp. Ellie, Ben and Brian made a contribution of biscuits and mustard chicken as well. After cookout, there was free swim for everyone and the adventure pathfinders stayed in outpost for their overnight.
On Thursday, groups got creative and made clay in the craft shop. H2 and H3 dressed up as aliens for lunch, while Day Camp 2 dressed as super heroes. After lunch, H7 made cards in the dining hall with Doreen. H3 got a taste of pioneer when they went to cook cowboy mac in P1 for dinner. Thursday is dance day! The homesteaders had an ice cream social and did some dancing to classics like the “Cha Cha Slide” and the “Cotton Eyed Joe.” There was even a limbo competition! The pioneer dance was themed “Neon Under the Sea.” It was a good time for all. After the dance, homestead girls had a sleepover in the E.C. and watched Anastasia. Today, after a lovely chapel by Day Camp 1 complete with an original rendition of “A Wonderful World,” Walter introduced this weekend’s competition central. Competition central takes a lot of planning and will take place on Sunday. The theme for this year’s competition central is Olympics. The teams are as follows: Brazil lead by Jordan and Melissa, China lead by the Kelsey sisters (Anne and Ellie), Italy lead by Shaun and Libbie, and Madagascar lead by Laura and John. Teams will meet for the first time this afternoon, and free swim will be after dinner. We are ready for a busy and exciting weekend and everyone is curious to see who will win the trophy!! Happy Friday! -Laura Fourth session is finally here! This session is one of our favorites, and its great to have so many familiar faces with us here at camp. With so many returning campers we have hit the ground running, kicking off the session with exciting activities for all. H6 had a blast on the water, banana boating and then heading to a bonfire with other Homestead units on the beach. This morning they even got up for a sunrise boat ride! H1 joined in on the fun with H6 as they engaged in a swordfight. H7 spent their first day being creative with clay at the craft shop and making pickles with Libbie in the Environmental Center. H4 had a special lunch on the boat with Anne and Megan from the pool and craft shop, while the ladies of H8 braved the low ropes course and went canoeing.
Our older campers have been having a great first couple days as well. The ladies of Pioneer and our Sailing Pathfinders joined the pool staff for water aerobics last night. P5 went sailing and made sand candles with Megan while P4 made a prayer flag for the chapel. The Adventure Pathfinder girls went on a canoeing excursion where they army crawled through the marsh while their male counterparts practiced Tai Chi on the beach. More exciting activities to come so keep checking for new posts! -Anne |
